Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Is one of my favorites, a big cast of characters lovingly written that doesn't shy away from adult themes and flows between light hearted and deeply serious tones with grace. Animation is cool, the worldbuilding is fun, and there's a lot to love here.

Code Geass

Is one of my favorites, is about this overly dramatic exiled prince leading a Japanese revolt against the British-USAmerican empire because his mom died. Has violence, pizza hut, and is all around an enjoyable time.

Death Note

Is one of my favorites, is about this privileged loser, child of a cop, who has no deep thoughts about the origins of crime and thinks that murdering all criminals will make the world better. He gets a fancy book that lets him do that and everyone is rightfully horrified that a teenager has been given this power and intend to stop him. Also he takes a potato chip and eats it, all according to keikaku*

*(translators note: keikaku means plan)

Kill la Kill

spectacularly lovingly animated adventure with a strong female lead which isn't very common in anime. Not to mention the killer sound track. The fanservice can be a big turn off, but the show switches from "fanservice" to "making fun of fanservice" fairly early on. The ending scene where everyone is naked entirely non-sexually was actually cool and thematic especially since nonsexual nudity is rare in media and even more so in anime.

Darker than Black

An edgy anime, but also really cool, about a world where the stars have been replaced and sociopathic supernatural killers known as contractors fight in the shadows, but each has a penance for using their power. Is cool, has good action, and a fun watch.

Psycho-pass

A show that dances with political themes, and critiques of policing that don't quite land, but it's an interesting story about soft girl becoming a police and being surprised she is expected to do police brutality! It has a really cool near-future not-quite-cyberpunk aesthetic and some really good ops eds. Also an enjoyable watch.
